Have you noticed a lingering pet "stank" — an underlying odor that won't go away even after you have vacuumed your home thoroughly? Then it may be time to go the extra step to get rid of that pet-related funk. Here are three areas where those dog and cat odors may be trapped in your home:
Pet Beds
Your pet bed may appear clean, but if you get down and take a good whiff, you might notice that it has a strong odor. If the bed has a removable cover, take it off and throw it in the wash. For beds that don't have a removable cover, use a cloth and a fabric freshener to hand wash your bed, or you can try to clean it with hot water and soap in your bathtub. If your bed will fit, you can throw it in the dryer or, if it's too big, allow it to air dry thoroughly in the sun.
Fabric Couches and Other Furniture
If your pets are allowed on your couches and chairs, their oils and dander may have settled into the fabric. So it's a good idea to give your furniture a thorough cleaning on a regular basis. One option is to use a pre-packaged fabric cleaner and a carpet cleaning machine with an attachment for upholstery. Before using any cleaning solution on your couch, always pre-test it on a small "hidden" area to ensure that you won't damage your furniture.
Another easy option is to sprinkle baking soda liberally over the fabric on your furniture and allow to sit overnight so it can absorb any odors. Then vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly.
Carpets
There are a number of manufacturer-made carpet freshening powders you can use on your rugs, or you can just sprinkle baking soda liberally over your carpet. Let the powder sit overnight and then vacuum your carpets thoroughly.
